Quite unintentionally, this site became dedicated to the complex and eccentric Michelle Dockery. My aim is to provide fresh material and perspective for her fans.

In the 'Michelle Dockery Professional Archive' link below you will find the most complete collection of her screen performances on the internet.

Michelle Dockery as Amazonia

frank-o-meter:

Number 9 of my Downton Abbey/Justice Society of America mash-up

You can’t have a Justice Society without an Amazon Princess. Who better for the role than Lady Mary Crawley as played by Michelle Dockery. In my imagined universe, off the coast of the England is a mysterious Isle of Woman – home to the Amazons. Once each generation they send a champion to fight the world’s evils.

OMG is the Amazonia joke intentional?

Swallows and Amazons set to sail again in the Lake District (From The Westmorland Gazette)

eqbonum:

BUDDING young actors are being sought for a new big screen version of a timeless children’s story which is set to be filmed in the Lake District.

Arthur Ransome’s famous Swallows and Amazons adventure was first published in 1930 and is now to be brought into the 21st Century by Harbour Pictures and BBC Films.

Filming is set to begin this summer, with Coniston, Windermere, Ullswater and Derwentwater all to feature heavily.

And ahead of the start of shooting, a call has been put out by Dixie Chassay Casting for children to put themselves forward. …

The book tells the story of the Walker and Blackett children who, over one summer, share a series of adventures that weave imaginative tales of pirates and exploration into life in rural England.

The most recent silver screen adaptation was released in 1974. Harbour Pictures has previously enjoyed huge hits with Calendar Girls, starring Helen Mirren, and Kinky Boots.

Producer Nick Barton told The Gazette: “We are not remaking the film from the 1970s — we have gone right back to the original books and want to be true to them. The reason I wanted to do this film was that I read all of the books when I was a child and loved them.”

Mr Barton also revealed that the key role of James Turner, who the children nickname Captain Flint, has gone to Dan Stevens, who starred in Downton Abbey.

Filming is expected to run from early July until September. Young people who are interested in applying for casting can email a picture with details including age to swallowsand amazons2013 @gmail.com

I remember Arthur Ransome because Michelle Dockery played his wife in Amazonia.

If You Really Like An Argument

Michelle picking fights with everyone! I really think they cast her for these confrontation scenes.

“That’s why I love acting, because you tap into parts of yourself that you wouldn’t necessarily need to in real life. I’m quite surprised at how out of control I can be on stage, because actually I find I like to be in control in life. It’s quite freeing, really.”

— Michelle Dockery [X]

sky-sparkling-with-diamonds:

With this “Restless” euphoria going on, let’s remember another spy story of Michelle’s, which is “Amazonia, A Portrait of Arthur Ransome”:

Years before he found fame with Swallows and Amazons, Arthur Ransome was swept up in the dramatic events of the Russian Revolution, living a dangerous double life as a journalist and agent for both the Bolsheviks and the Foreign Office. War, revolution, espionage and romance feature in this biographical portrait of one of our best-loved children’s authors.

Rory Kinnear plays the real life English children’s author turned journalist Arthur Ransome who wants to save Trotsky’s secretary (played by Michelle Dockery) from the revolution.

Here we have a complete mp3 file (82 Mb, 1,5 hours),

and here we have the same but cut by our dear in-flagrante into 10 pieces for more convenient playback,

and here is a torrent for those who prefer torrents, I seed when I don’t sleep.

This really was a beautiful radio show. I should say in my original post, Michelle’s part doesn’t start until the end of part 3. From part 4 to 10 it becomes the Michelle Dockery and Rory Kinnear show.

I think some listeners gave up before part 4 which is a shame. This show’s got everything. Including a romantic scene at a train station in part 5 and an angry Michelle picking a sexy fight with Rory in part 6.

The Russian Connection

Michelle Dockery will play the role of Princess Myagkaya in the new film “Anna Karenina”. She will be no stranger to playing Russian parts. Much of her work has in some way revolved around Russian subject matter.

For starters, one of the earliest plays Michelle performed for The National Theater was “The UN Inspector” (2005), which was an adaptation of Gogol’s “The Government Inspector” set in Tzarist Russia. For this play, voice coach Kate Godfrey taught the cast to effect a Russian sounding accent by playing voice recordings of an interpreter from the Ukrainian Embassy.

Michelle must have made an impression as she would later get Russian accent parts in the plays “Dying For It” (2007), “Uncle Vanya” (2008), and “Burnt By The Sun” (2009). Also that year Michelle recorded the BBC radio program “Amazonia”, a story set in the Russian Revolution.

Perhaps one reason director Joe Wright cast Michelle in “Anna Karenina” is so that she could help the other actors with their Russian accents.

The BBC radio program “Amazonia” takes place when WWI is winding down and the the Russian Civil War was just beginning. Rory Kinnear plays the real life English children’s author turned journalist Arthur Ransome who wants to save Trotsky’s secretary (played by Michelle Dockery) from the revolution.
Listen for Michelle Dockery’s sweet Russian accent in this radio broadcast. Between this, “Uncle Vanya”, and “Burnt by the Sun”, she would have a well polished accent for “Anna Karenina”.

Arthur Ransome is best known now for translations of
Russian folk tales, and the Swallows and Amazons novels.

But once he was far better known for a scandalous libel
suit with Lord Alfred Douglas (Oscar Wilde’s ‘Bosie’),
and then for being overseas correspondent in Russia for
The Daily News, and then for The Manchester Guardian.

He was in Russia during the 1917 revolutions, and the
post WWI western interventions in Russia. His political
stance made him unpopular with the UK’s intelligence
services, who seem to have blackmailed him into doing
some work for them. At the same time he was posting
articles sympathetic to the Bolshevik’s.

This is some of the story.

Spend Sunday with Michelle Dockery

http://www.notfortourists.com/radars/24312.jpg

I now have the BBC radio program “Amazonia”. It’s the true story of an idealistic English journalist (Rory Kinnear) who covers the Russian Revolution and falls for Trotsky’s secretary (Michelle Dockery).

It really is quite entertaining. I’ve never listen to a radio program this long, but it’s surprisingly enjoyable. It’s over an hour, so you’ll need to make tea. Preferably served the Russian way. In a glass, with lemon. Samovar optional.

The audio program will be posted early Sunday morning. If the BBC have a problem with it I’d willingly take it down. But there’s no other way to hear this program, as the BBC website says they have no plan to rebroadcast this again, and it’s not on sale anywhere.

Michelle Dockery and Rory Kinnear recording the radio program “Amazonia” for BBC Radio 3.

Would be nice if someone could find a copy.
